Our therapeutic approach is to provide support and practical feedback to help clients effectively address personal life challenges.  Our therapists integrate complementary methodologies and techniques to offer a highly personalized approach tailored to each client. With compassion and understanding, we work with each individual to empower them build on their strengths and attain the personal growth they are committed to accomplishing.

Our therapists are equipped to utilize a variety of therapeutic approaches and practice trauma informed care. They are highly trained in both mental health and addictions counseling as well as crises repsonse and prevention stratgies. We are committed to furthering our training to utilize the most up to date and evidence based practices.

North Canton Therapy Works was founded in 2010 by Cindy Zurbrugg and Natalie Edwards. As professional colleagues for several years prior, they connected as they both share a passion for mental health recovery and a desire to do what it takes to provide clients with a non judgmental, professional, and caring experience that fosters success and positive change. They both felt called to develop a practice that focuses on these values and the highest standards of professional care. Our practitioners are all highly regarded in the field and bring their own unique talents and expertise to the practice.


Natalie Edwards LPCC-S, MA Ed
Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, Supervisor

Natalie is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor Supervisor licensed by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board. Natalie earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in Psychology from Kent State University in Kent, OH. She earned a Master's of Arts in Education degree in Clinical Counseling from Malone University in Canton, OH. Natalie has specialized training as a Trauma and Loss Clinical Specialist from the National Institute of Trauma and Loss in Children.

Natalie has experience as a Family Involvement Coordinator in the Stark County area as well as a mental health counselor and supervisor working for Trillium Family Solutions. She also has been a child and family therapist for Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health. Natalie has experience as a consultant for various Stark County schools as a member of CARE Teams and has conducted suicide/risk prevention programs such as Teen Screen.

Cindy is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor licensed by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board. Cindy earned a Bachelor's of Science in Education degree from Kent State University in Kent, OH. She earned a Master's of Science in Education degree in Clinical Counseling from Akron University in Akron OH. Cindy is a Trauma and Loss Clinical Specialist certified by the National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children.

Cindy has experience as a Certified Prevention Specialist for Quest Recovery Services. Cindy has also worked as a Therapist for the Domestic Violence Shelter in Alliance,OH and a child and family therapist for Child and Adolescent Behavioral Health. Cindy has experience as a consultant for various Stark County schools as a member of CARE Teams and has participated in suicide/risk prevention programs such as Teen Screen.

Casey Quinn, MA, LPC

Casey Quinn is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Ohio. Casey graduated from Walsh University with a Bachelor's of Arts in Psychology-Community/Clinical. Casey also holds a Master of the Arts in School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walsh University. He has been inducted into Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, as well as the Alpha Mu Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, the international honor society for the profession of counseling.

Casey is a licensed school counselor in the state of Ohio. Previously, he has experience as a school counseling intern at Green Intermediate School and Green Middle School where he co-facilitated groups related to leadership, friendship, grief and loss. In addition, he worked at St. Thomas Aquinas High School as a guidance counseling intern.

Shalonna Jackson, LSW

Licensed Social Worker

Shalonna Jackson is a Licensed Social Worker licensed by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board. Shalonna earned a Bachelor's degree in Social Work from Bowling Green State University and her Master's degree in Social Work from The University of Akron. She has been inducted into the Omicron Omega Chapter of Phi Alpha, National Social Work Honor Society, as well as the Golden Key International Honor Society and MORTAR Board.

Shalonna has several years of experience with case management in the mental health field, providing supportive assistance to youth receiving therapeutic services in a variety of school and community settings. Shalonna also works to provide individual and group counseling to at risk adolescents as a school-based therapist.

She is an active member of the American Mental Health Counselors Association. She has been inducted into Psi Chi, the international honor society in psychology, Alpha Kappa Delta, the international honor society in sociology, and the Alpha Mu chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, the international honor society for the profession of counseling.

Ashley has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, with minors in Sociology and Art from Walsh University, as well as a Master of the Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walsh University. She has worked in an intensive outpatient/partial hospitalization setting, specifically with those with severe anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and personality disorders. She has history working in case management, dealing with families and children who have undergone trauma, loss, abuse, and various mental health disorders.

Amanda Popik, MA, LPCC

Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor

Amanda is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor through the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board. Amanda earned her Bachelor's of Arts degree in Psychology from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. She earned her Master's of Arts degree in Counseling: Specialization in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Adler University in Chicago. Amanda is also a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, certified by the International Association of Trauma Professionals.

Amanda has experience in working with individuals who struggle with substance abuse problems, both in group and individual settings. She has been a therapist with Murtis Taylor Human Services System in Cleveland, Ohio, performing assessments and individual counseling to those in need. Amanda's areas of interest are those who have experienced trauma of any kind, the under privileged, substance abuse, mood disorders and couples counseling.

Laura earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in Psychology from Castleton University in Castleton, VT. Laura has previous experience in counseling individuals of all ages in various settings. She takes a holistic approach in a relaxed client centered setting which promotes trust and empowering the client.

Erika Pozuc, LPCC

Erika is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor licensed by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist Board. She has a Bachelor's of Arts in Psychology from the University of Mount Union. Erika also has a Master's Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of Akron in 2015. She is an EMDRIA trained EMDR trauma-informed therapist.

Erika has previous experience counseling in various settings such as homes, schools and communities, with all ages and varying backgrounds. She takes a relaxed, client centered, holistic approach to therapy, utilizing evidence based treatments; primarily including CBT, mindfulness, DBT, and EMDR.

Layla Armstrong, LISW

Licensed Independent Social Worker 

Layla is a Licensed Independent Social Worker by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board. Layla received her Bachelor's Degree in Family and Child Development and Master of Social Work degree from The University of Akron. 

Layla began her career at Oriana House, Inc. providing substance use and trauma informed treatment services. She facilitated women's intensive outpatient groups, family education sessions, and provided individual psychotherapy. Layla's calm and positive demeanor allows her to easily build rapport with clients. She uses a person-centered, strengths-based approach to empower her clients to make the changes they want to see in their lives.

Sherry Doherty, LPCC

Sherry is a Licensed Professional counselor licensed by the Counselor, Social Work, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from The University of Akron and she has a Master’s degree in Education in Community Counseling from Malone University. 

Sherry has worked in the area of social work and mental health therapy for many years for several leading nonprofits. She has concentrated her professional work on building strong families in which parents, and children are able to have positive relationships, communication, personal growth, and happiness. Sherry is also a trainer for The University of Cincinnati providing training to foster, adoptive, and kin care parents to give them tools and techniques to help them with their parenting success.

Danielle Risby, LSW

Danielle is a Licensed Social Worker licensed by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board. Danielle earned her Bachelor's Degree in Psychology with a minor in Spanish from Ohio University and her Master's Degree in Social Work from The Ohio State University.

Sean earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Akron. He earned his Master of Science in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walden University in Minneapolis, Minnesota where was inducted into the Omega Zeta Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, the national honor fraternity for the profession of counseling. Sean has specialized training in Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Dialectical Behavior Therapy, evidence based practices for the treatment of many mental health conditions. He is a
CAMS Trained clinician, with experience in Evidence-Based Suicide-Specific Care. Sean is also board certified by the National Board of Forensic Evaluators as a Certified Forensic Mental Health Evaluator.

Sean has over ten years of experience helping clients to achieve their goals. He has a history of working in community mental health clinics providing case management and therapy services to individuals diagnosed with severe mental illnesses and substance use disorders. Sean utilizes treatment approaches that are evidence-based, affirming, and uniquely tailored to each individual.

Carolyn Ruschak, MEd, LPC 

Licensed Professional Counselor 

Carolyn is a Licensed Professional Counselor licensed by the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board. Carolyn earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, and a postbaccalaureate certification in secondary education from The University of Phoenix in Tempe, Arizona. She earned a Master of Arts degree in Education with a focus in Community Counseling from Malone University in Canton, Ohio. Carolyn is also a fully trained EMDR therapist from The Institute for Creative Mindfulness in Warren, Ohio, as well as a Dancing Mindfulness facilitator.

Carolyn has worked in the mental health field for both non-profit community based and private practice agencies. Her professional work has a focus on treating life transitions, developmental/childhood trauma, relationship issues to include parental estrangement from adult children, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and substance misuse. Carolyn approaches counseling from a client-centered/Rogerian lens, using a combination of mindfulness practices, behavior therapy, EMDR (eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing), cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, motivational interviewing techniques, and narrative therapy. Carolyn has training and experience in
